ADA requirements at Sea to Sky Adventure
At Sea to Sky Adventure, we are fully committed to our facilities being up to ADA standards in meeting all of the requirements necessary that are listed in the ADA checklist for existing facilities (version 2.1). We are even determined to excel and surpass those standards in accommodation by constantly evolving our facilities and programs in order to achieve the utmost in accessibility and inclusiveness. Upon construction of Sea to Sky adventures facilities we have hired a professional expert in designing and instituting accessible approaches to all facets of the building.
Our entrances meet and comply with the ADA requirements which states that they need to be at least 36 inches wide. A majority of our entrances are 74 inches with our tightest entrance being at 39 inches still adhering to the requirements. As for the main entrance there are no stairs, it is entirely just well paved floors with a cement component that provides good traction for everyone. Surrounding entrances there is a good amount of open space in order to allow the opportunity for circulation and navigation around these areas if needed. When it comes to head room we have extremely high ceilings with our facility being a renovated hangar for an airport so there are no complications with overhang. There are no curbs outside our facility so it is easy to navigate from the parking lot to our facility. We also have the ten nearest parking spots in our parking lot designated for accessible parking, marked with accessible parking signs, two of the spots meet the requirements and are dedicated for van accessible parking.
Along any major lanes of passage or areas that have ramps longer then 6 feet or a slope of some sort, Sea to Sky Adventures will make sure that there is railing that is 36 inches high of the ground with a width of 48 inches. We will also incorporate rails in our accessible bathroom stalls with an area of 6 feet by 6 feet and toilets that are 18 inches off of the ground. Our lavatories also comply with all of the requirements such as the space needed in front of the lavatory being 36 inches wide by 50 inch deep clear space in front, the rim of the lavatory is 30 inches of the ground. All of our entrances are ADA accessible, all carpeting and mats are at a 1/4 of an inch in height from the ground. We have an elevator that can take participants to the 2nd floor if they aren't able to go up the stairs, it will be clearly located with a sign directing those to the location. We will have various ADA signs with braille throughout our facility at locations such as the restroom, office, elevators among other areas necessary in our facility. The elevators abide by all of the requirements with our call buttons being 40 inches of the ground, with verbal, physical, and visible signals for various elevator functions such as door opening/closing and floor indicators. Our restrooms and water fountains fully adhere to the requirements necessary for ADA compliance
Our door handles will be levers at 40 inches off the ground, levers incorporate universal design for those who are possibly trying to open it with a closed fist. Our entrances will also have the electric button option that you could push to electronically open a door. The doors will be easy to open with little to no force, and has a closing time of 15 seconds when opened to the fullest. When it comes to rooms at Sea to Sky Adventure we will make sure we comply with the ADA requirement of 36 inches wide for pathways and a 5 foot circle for everyone to maneuver smoothly and safely. We have a large amount of emergency egress option which will have both visual and audio aids such as flashing lights and audible signals to alert someone of an emergency exit process. Our signage will comply with ADA requirements such as where they should be placed, size of characters, braille conversion of the sign, and more. For furniture at Sea to Sky Adventure we will also ensure that we are abiding to the requirements set such as, the tops of tables being 30 inches of the ground. All of our counters will be off the ground at 30 inches as well, which is complying with ADA requirements.
